All-Recovery Support Meetings:

Wednesdays at 12:00 noon, beginning Thursday, May 12
Beginning next week, we will host a new recovery support group, coordinated by the City of Portland Health & Human Services Department, based on the philosophy that people from every addiction recovery pathway have much in common and can benefit from sharing together. These meetings will offer space for people to share their addiction recovery experiences, with an emphasis on the hope and healing of recovery and how recovery changes lives, regardless of the substance or behavior that is at the root of the addiction.

Community Meals

For the past few weeks we have been working in collaboration with the Wayside Soup Kitchen to serve community meals at Hope.Gate.Way. twice a week.

We offer dinner every Thursday at 5:30pm and lunch every Tuesday at 12:00pm.

It is our hope that these meals will attract people from our neighborhood who need companionship as much as they need a hot meal.

Community meals coming soon to Hope.Gate.Way.

New partnership with Wayside Soup Kitchen:

We're excited about a new partnership with Wayside Soup Kitchen through which we will be hosting community meals here at Hope.Gate.Way. - most likely one lunch and one dinner per week - beginning as early as next month. If you're interested in volunteering or helping to lead in this new outreach ministry, please speak with Don or Sue Rudalevige, Allen or Sara, or Erica. Please keep Wayside in your prayers as they transition to a new approach to feeding hungry people.

Please keep Wayside in your prayers as they transition to a new approach to feeding hungry people. And please keep this new ministry in your prayers as we celebrate this opportunity to help feed hungry people and build deeper bonds of community within the Parkside neighborhood.

First Friday Art Walk

Friday, March 5 - 5-8 pm

In March we will host an exhibit called "Chroma" by local artists Libby Barrett & Francine Schrock. As part of Portland's First Friday Art Walk, join us this next Friday evening for the opening, and stay for a shift to help welcome folks to Hope.Gate.Way.

Rethink Jesus: a Worship Series for Lent

Lent is a season of 40 days (plus six Sundays) that lead us on a journey with Christ, to the darkness of the cross and on to the hope of resurrection. Think of Lent as an opportunity to turn around, to hit the restart button: an invitation to intentional self-reflection and recommitment to spiritual practices, as preparation for Holy Week and Easter.

As we journey through these weeks of Lent, we're stripping away some of the cultural overlays that have distorted our understanding of Jesus and his message, by exploring in a deeper way some of the key themes that we find in the Gospels' portrayal of Jesus. Join us for week two of this worship series... You may be surprised and challenged to encounter in a new way the truly counter-cultural witness of Jesus beneath the layers that often blind us to Christ's real message. And what better time to "rethink Jesus" than Lent, which calls us to a more focused faith?

Empty Bowl Supper

a Benefit for Haiti
This Saturday, February 27 - 5-7 pm
Sacred Heart/ St. Dominic Church

Enjoy a delicious bowl of soup while supporting New Mourne Rouge School - a children's nutrition and education program in Haiti, which our friends at Sacred Heart Church support on an ongoing basis. For a suggested donation of $10 (and a can of soup for the food pantry, if you're able), you'll have dinner and take home the empty bowl as a reminder of sisters and brothers who have no food to eat.

Allen and Sara will be at Sacred Heart/ St. Dominic at 5 pm and would welcome others from the congregation to join them. The church is located on the corner of Mellen & Sherman Streets. Parking is available on the street and in the PROP parking lot on Cumberland Avenue.

Parkside Neighborhood Give-Away Day

Volunteer opportunity: Parkside Neighborhood Give-Away Day
Saturday, March 6 - 9 am - 1 pm
at Sacred Heart/ St. Dominic Parish (corner of Sherman and Mellen Streets)

There will be a Give-Away day in the Parkside Neighborhood on March 6. This is basically a free yard sale for anyone in the neighborhood with needs. The past events have been so big and successful that the Neighborhood Center is too small to accommodate all the people and items to be given away!

Volunteers are needed on:
Thursday, March 4 -- 8:45-11:15am and 3:45-6:15pm
Friday, March 5 -- 8:45-11:15am and 3:45-6:15pm
Saturday, March 6 8:45-11am and 11am-1:15pm

Also, clean out your closets, your attic, or your cupboards... Donations of clothing, kitchen and household goods, baby items, children's books and toys, and diapers would be greatly appreciated. If you have questions or are willing to sign up to volunteer, please be in touch with Erica at erica@newlightportland.org
